Party of One (BookLook Review)

JB Smith“Party of One” offers us, the Church that our Savior loves and purchased, a much needed conversation about singleness. A book on singleness can cover an array of topics, which this book touches on a lot of them.

While I disagreed with Joy Beth on many fronts, I respected her vulnerability. She warns us in advance, that this book will be outside of our comfort zone. And, it definitely was for me. I wrestled with a lot of things, but found comfort in others. I honestly don’t know how I felt about it all together yet.

Thankfully for me, this book is more like a memoir – so it makes for an easier grade | review. It earns four stars, because it is mostly listening in on conversations between Joy Beth and many others.

While I wanted to love this book, looked forward to its release, and the opportunity to read it, I honestly just did not love it. I thought it would leave me feeling closer to the Lord and armed in my singleness, but it had a different affect on me. I hope those who struggle with singleness will read it and make up their own mind about “Party of One”.

Bottom line: it opens the door to help us talk about singleness and how to better follow Him as His Church. We may disagree on various fronts as we listen into these table talks through this book, but it gets the conversations started. Which is the purpose for the book.

Journal The Word Bible Review {BookLook}

Hi Friends!!

Over next few weeks, we will be playing “catch up” – as we grow together through 1-2 Timothy. It is mind blowing that we are half way through our life giving Press On Toward Faithfulness Bible Study! I am learning soo much as I sit and study the Word of God. Be sure to keep an eye out for new posts, regarding our study.

Now, for today’s review!

Let’s Get Started

Initially, I was surprised by the Bible journal. I didn’t know what to expect, because I have never owned or seen a journal styled Bible in person.

The Highlights –

  • Its Cover: The cover alone will be very inviting to women young and old.
  • Each page offers a journal space to jot down notes.
  • There are over 450 journal prompts! Imagine the transformation the Holy Spirit can do, as our teenage girls make their aim to fully use this Bible – prompts included.

Why I Recommend –

I highly recommend this Bible for teen girls! It would be perfect for them, and draw them nearer to the Lord – as they read, take note of writing prompts, and respond through their Bible reading time.

This Bible may be limited in “features,” but would make for a wonderful tool in drawing near to the Lord!

My Testimony –

Even now as I think about these things, I am reminded of my favorite Bible – which has no “extra” features. I absolutely love the Bible, but this copy in particular is extremely meaningful to me. It has all of many notes. I absolutely love that Bible, because of the memories. This “Journal Through The Word” Bible is an opportunity to make those kind of memories with the Lord! The joy infused moments with the Lord, that make us want to keep reading and studying our Bible.

In Closing –

This Bible would be a great fit for teenage girls. It isn’t too bulky, and is beautiful from the inside – out. One of the best benefits of this Bible is its ability to lay flat. You never have to worry about losing your spot, because of the way this Bible has been designed.

I think it is a very nice Bible and the Lord will use it to draw others nearer to Him. He will use the journal prompts to encourage His daughters to keep reading and writing through what they read.

NIV Color Code Bible {BookLook}

If you are looking for a new Bible, I have one to share with you all. If I was searching for a new Bible, this is the one I would want. As a highlighting girl, this Bible is perfect!

The NIV Color Code Bible is designed to be a children’s Bible, but would be extremely beneficial for anyone.

Honestly, this is probably my favorite Bible {excluding my personal, well highlighted, Bible}.

I seriously love this Bible. I am so glad to have this opportunity to share it with you. I know, there are many choices when considering a particular Bible for our personal study. Add this one to your list!

The Introductions:

Well over 50 pages are devoted to introducing us to the Bible! In these pages, we are given a well informed introduction as we learn many things. It is such a rarity to have a deliberate introduction like this, about the things that truly matter. Making this Bible the best choice.

The Highlights:

This gorgeous Bible has 3,000 passages highlighted to show us important Scriptures. Colorful highlights. Each fitting into 10 different categories. Not only does it highlight Scripture, we are given an “easy-to-understand” teaching on each category – which equips us with the truth.  As we search the Scriptures on God, New Life, or other areas, we are taught and led closer to our Lord Jesus.

While designed for children, this Bible with its added features would be extremely valuable to anyone who is seeking the Lord through His Word – the Bible.

The Teachings:

In the introduction, we are met with Bible teachings in an easy-to-understand format. We are taught things like –

  • What is the Bible?
  • Who wrote the Bible?
  • Why we should read the Bible?

“God wants you to know Him. He made you and He loves you more than you can imagine. . . (p. 21).”

Designed to Help Us Draw Near

The features are just amazing, my friends. I am excited about this Bible and how it can lead others into the Word of God. The highlights are intriguing, especially to someone like me who loves to highlight. My mom loves this Bible too. We actually decided to share it.

In Christ,

5 Minutes with Jesus: Quiet Time for Your Soul

Quiet Time 4 Your Soul - 5 MinutesI want to share with you all a wonderful devotional that will fit into any type of schedule you could possibly have.

As a person with chronic illnesses, this devotional, 5 Minutes with Jesus: Quiet Time for Your Soul, is perfect for my life. It fits in with whatever kind of day I am having. This is a devotional I can use in my quiet time with Jesus, because it is just five minutes.

While each devotional is only five or so minutes, it is packed with much truth. Each day, Sheila and Sherri meet with us and share heartfelt truths. After this time of devotion, we met with a few Scriptures to help carry us through our day. These Scriptures share with us God’s truth about what we are learning. Truths we can hold onto. Truths that remind us God is greater. Life changing truths, that we can build our lives upon.

As the authors share with us in the introduction, our lives need a pause button. We need just a few minutes to catch our breath. Our time with Jesus is that time to breathe in and be given the strength to carry on.

God loves you. He never intended for you to live a frenzied, exhausting life. . . Jesus longs to give you the gift of rest, and it can begin with five minutes a day (p. 4-5).

Oh friend, let us come to meet Jesus. Maybe we don’t have much to give. Jesus Christ, the Living God, has much to give us. He wants to pour into our spirits and help us in our daily lives.

Even if you only have five minutes, this is more than enough time for you to meet with our Lord Jesus and find refreshment for your soul. I love this devotional, and look forward to the many treasures I will find in it. I absolutely recommend this devotional!

The 5 Minutes with Jesus series is the perfect way to start your day with a replenished heart.

Fearless by Jo Ann Maxwell (A “BookLook” Review)

_225_350_book-2103-coverIn her book, Fearless, Jo Ann Maxwell shares her faith in Jesus Christ and how she is learning to cope with MS. While MS is a roller coaster none of us want to try and ride, she shares her journey of the crazy ride – which offers honest God-sized hope to any sufferer of chronic illness or pain.

I am thankful for Jo Ann and her book. If I could say anything to briefly describe this review, it would be a heartfelt “thank you” and “you seriously need to read this“.

While there are many books on suffering, even Christian life and suffering, this is one of those we can classify as a “must read”. This book is a Bible study, sort of book. It is not based on other people’s random ideas, but Jo Ann pulls out her Bible and actually does Bible study with you (example below). While it is a rarity to find a book that combines real life suffering and the earnest desire to see God in it, she does it (and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit)!

Jo Ann shares her journey. She doesn’t share just the pretty things. She shares her entire heart, and pours it out as an offering to God through her writing. This book is consumed with hope we, too, can have in our lives. She offers much encouragement in Fearless.

In Jesus Christ, there is an abundance of hope!

Throughout this book and the Scriptures shared, we learn how and why we can come to God – even in times of great suffering. God is for us. While we may carry a tremendous weight of suffering, God is absolutely for us and wants to be our ever-present help!

While sharing in a Bible study with her readers, she shares some insight into Mark 6:45-52 –

He sends me into the storm, sees my struggle, comes to me, talks to me, is in the circumstance with me, and the storm ceases. Perhaps my circumstance doesn’t cease, but the storms in my thoughts and emotions cease when I allow Jesus to “come into the boat” with me.

Let’s allow Jesus to invade our circumstances, friend! I cannot tell you what He will do, once you invite Him into your circumstance. He may remove it, but He might not. He might choose a different way. A more relational way, like staying with you in the storm – making you completely certain of His love for you. I invite you to join me, as we learn what it means to live Fearless and enjoy the presence of Christ!
