When we are afraid, who will we trust?
When we are afraid, out of our minds with fear and panic, we have to talk our way through it. A message I enjoy by John Piper, reminds us that we need to minister to ourselves. As we go through our cycles of level 10 fear, we have to talk ourselves through.
We need to encourage ourselves to put our trust in God, through His Son Jesus Christ.
When my cat, his name is Compassion, is afraid, he bolts. He will find a hiding place and we can’t find him for a bit.
Without fear or panic, I am a much better place to walk myself through this mess of worrying. Where is he? Is he okay?
Because of where my fear level was at a few weeks ago, I had to actually keep reminding myself that my thinking was irrational.
“No, you did not put him in the washer.” [But seriously imagine my relief when we put the clothes in the dryer, and he wasn’t accidentally washed.]
I had no idea where my cat was hiding (under the bed, actually).
But I like having that comfort, of knowing I can fight those irrational thoughts.
I had no idea where my cat was.
And, yes I was still very afraid.
But there is this comfort of knowing our God is mighty and He will see us through this.
“When I am afraid, I will trust in You God.” [Psalm 56:3]
. . . I had no idea where my cat was, at that moment. All I knew was hopefully he was playing “Hide and Seek”.
And so, I kept praying. And tried to fight through the fear and actively hope I can keep trusting Jesus Christ and not give into the irrational thoughts.
I am choosing to encourage and minister to myself, as I fight these fear driven moments where my thoughts are not rational.
I am choosing to be present, remember God’s got this, and. . . I need to fight through those irrational thoughts where fear is winning and my sanity feels like it is losing.
Fear makes us very irrational people, but our God is a million times greater than our deepest fear.
As we fight through our deepest fears, like losing another loved one, let us arm ourselves with the Word of God that teaches us despite the paralyzing fear we may feel.
1… “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You (Psalm 56:3).”
2… “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).”
3… “When anxiety was great within me, Your consolation brought joy to my soul (Psalm 94:19).”
4… “An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up (Proverbs 12:25).”
5… “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my salvation and my God (Psalm 42:11).”
